Near and Offsite Data Backups
From Tape to Disk
The ever-increasing volume of data and the ever more demanding need for quick, reliable and non-disruptive restore means that tape-based solutions are no longer effective.
Tape, in contrast to disk, is physically delicate and easily compromised by environmental factors such as heat, humidity, and magnetic interference. Its innate sensitivity contributes to high failure rates. Backup and recovery experts estimate that anywhere from 42 to 71 percent of tape restores fail and tape cartridges must be replaced frequently (every 6-12 months).
Disk is more reliable, faster and effective. A disk-based local backup system can be scaled to match the growing data requirement better than tape. It is both faster to backup and to restore from. With disk it is possible to put in day-to-day file restores into the hands of the users that use the system, thereby reducing the burden on IT administrators.
Disk solutions also have the advantage of being able to locate them offsite, backing up the primary site incrementally on a scheduled or ongoing basis. The disk-based asset can be further leveraged for disaster recovery and business continuity. Disk based solutions can have the further advantage of offering encyption and access controls to add more security to your data.
We would be happy to work with you to assess your business needs and to propose an appropriate backup solution.
